Insgesamt fünfmal wurde der Gesellschaftsroman Effi Briest von Regisseuren verschiedenster Generationen verfilmt. 1939 während des Nationalsozialismus drehte Gustaf Gründgens Der Schritt vom Wege. Zu Zeiten der Adenauer-Ära und der Heimatfilmwelle folgte 1955 die zweite Verfilmung von Rudolf Jugert mit dem Titel Rosen im Herbst. In der DDR entstand unter der Regie von Wolfgang Luderer 1969 Effi Briest. Nur wenige Jahre später widmete sich Rainer Werner Fassbinder in Westdeutschland Fontanes Klassiker. 1974 drehte der Autorenfilmer mit Fontane Effi Briest seine Version des Romans. Die aktuellste Verfilmung, Effi Briest von Hermine Huntgeburth, ist 2009 erschienen und betrachtet die Vorlage erstmals aus weiblicher Perspektive. Da die fünf Verfilmungen zugleich Filmgeschichte, Regiestile und Epochen der Geschichte Deutschlands widerspiegeln, erwies sich eine vergleichende Analyse als reizvolle Aufgabe für eine Magisterarbeit. Fontanes Werk als Thema zu wählen, ist auch aus Sicht der Literaturwissenschaft spannend. Schließlich bilden die fünf Adaptionen fünf zum Teil sehr unterschiedliche Interpretationen des Klassikers im Zuge des literarischen Rezeptionsprozesses. Als Untersuchungsschwerpunkt der Arbeit wurde die Darstellung der Eltern-Kind-Beziehung zwischen Protagonistin Effi und ihren Eltern gewählt. Gerade die Sicht auf das Familiensystem hat sich in der bemerkenswerten Entstehungsspanne von rund 70 Jahren stark verändert. So ist nicht nur die vergleichende Betrachtung der fünf Filme Ziel dieser Arbeit. Zusätzlich soll versucht werden, die unterschiedlichen Darstellungsweisen der Regisseure in den Kontext der Entstehungszeit zu bringen. Einleitend wird zunächst ein entsprechender Überblick über das Genre der Literaturverfilmung und dessen Entwicklung geschaffen, um die einzelnen Verfilmungen einordnen zu können. In Ansätzen soll zudem die intensive Beziehung zwischen Literatur und Film aufgezeigt und somit gleich zu Beginn auf die Problematik dieses Verhältnisses hingewiesen werden. Um Effi Briest sozialhistorisch einordnen zu können, folgt ein kurzer Abriss relevanter Themen zu Gesellschaftssystem und Familie im 19. Jahrhundert. Wie Fontane dies in seinem Roman verarbeitet hat, wird im nächsten Schritt aufgezeigt. Eine kurze, chronologisch aufgebaute Betrachtung der Familie Briest soll dabei den Filmanalysen vorangehen. Da die vorliegende Arbeit keine Werktreue-Diskussion darstellen soll, wird auf eine explizite Analyse des Romanstoffs verzichtet.
